Our Mental and Physical attributes are what makes us work; mentally
in the mind and physically in the body. Mental Health is the
position and state of our mind, and where there is an imbalance
or a weak point, this should be addressed. Mental
health problems range from the worries and grief we all experience
as part of everyday life, to the most bleak, suicidal depression
or complete loss of touch with every day reality.
It’s no different if we have bruised our
arm, broken a bone or require major surgery, and need to overcome
our physical health. The difference between Mental and Physical
health is where it happens in our body.
Mental illness can affect people of all ages and walks of
life. As mental health problems are believed to arise from
a number of different possible triggers (physical, social,
environmental, genetic), anyone subject to these are at risk
of mental health problems.
Most health professionals and researchers believe that psychiatric
disorders are usually the result of multiple interacting and
contributing factors.
Studies of the significant causes and processes involved in
the development of mental illness have found that there are
physical, social, environmental and psychological causes for
mental illness.
At the moment, there are no ‘tests’
as such, for mental illnesses. Mental health problems cannot
be diagnosed by checking the blood or body fluids of the person
experiencing symptoms, as they are not looking for something
which can be seen as present or not - which can be done for
other conditions and illnesses such as diabetes or cancer.
A diagnosis will usually be made by an experienced psychiatrist
working with other health professionals.
Initially, the person will be observed for symptoms, and the
doctor will check through a 'diagnostic schedule' to find
out how the person functions day to day. After this initial
interview, the individual will be monitored over a period
of time.
